Lessons Learned from Years of Smart Home Installations

By the InstallHer Team | installher.com

I've spent years helping homeowners discover the magic of smart home technology through Alexa and devices like hubs, Hue lights, Echo speakers, smart switches, plugs, dimmers, fan controls, thermostats, sprinkler systems, and even power management. My original goal was simple: make homes smarter, safer, and more efficient using voice control and automation. But real-world testing has taught me hard lessons about what works—and what doesn't. Here's what I've learned, so you can avoid my mistakes and build a reliable system.

The Overheating Bulb Trap

Most WiFi and Z-Wave smart bulbs look appealing on paper, but they overheat and fail prematurely. Heat buildup shortens LED life and causes random malfunctions. I've replaced dozens for frustrated clients.

Better path: Skip bulbs entirely. Use smart switches or dimmers that control dumb bulbs. They stay cooler, last longer, and give you full dimming without compatibility headaches.

WiFi Devices: Easy Start, Messy Finish

WiFi smart devices install in minutes—no hub required. But add 20+ and your network bottlenecks. Latency spikes, voice commands lag, and rebooting the router becomes routine.

Fix: Offload to dedicated protocols. Z-Wave and Zigbee run on separate frequencies, keeping your WiFi free for streaming and work.

My Go-To Systems

  • Lutron Caseta Hub + Switches: Rock-solid. The plug-in lamp dimmers are bulletproof. Clean app, instant response. Wish: Lutron made smart in-wall outlets—I'd use them everywhere.
  • Aeotec (formerly SmartThings) Hub: Best Z-Wave/Zigbee hub. Ties into locks, sensors, sprinklers, even EV chargers. Alexa voice control handles 90% of tasks. SmartThings app is cluttered; I stick to Alexa routines.
  • Philips Hue: Reliable brand, but bulbs underperform. Bridge is stable; app is okay. Good for color scenes, not daily drivers.
  • Govee: Biggest surprise. Solid build quality across strips, bulbs, and plugs. App needs work, but hardware earns trust.

LED Strip Secrets

Power supplies matter. "Dimmable" means different things—test compatibility or fry your setup. Voltage drop kills long runs; plan 12V or 24V feeds every 10–16 feet (24V travels farther with less drop—ideal for runs over 20 ft).

Connections: Skip crimp connectors. They've cost me repeat service calls. Solder or use proper terminal blocks for zero failures.

Ring Cameras: Slow but Steady

Ring launches slowly, but products ship polished. 4K models (dropping now) look promising. Warranty replacements arrive in days—no hassle.

Control That Doesn't Drive You Crazy

Options:

  • Voice (Alexa)
  • Apps/Remotes
  • Multi-app chaos
  • Central hub

Winner: Alexa voice + one clean app. Out-of-box routines work. Occasional "Alexa, turn on the lichens" misfire, but 95% accuracy.

Start Simple, Scale Smart

New build or retrofit—begin with a hub and 3–5 devices. Test, expand, automate.
